Ingredients
240 g | flour |
1 tbsp | salt |
1 tbsp | baking powder |
2 tsp | baking soda |
225 g | vegetable shortening |
450 ml | buttermilk |
Instructions
Preheat oven to 190° C.
Cut cold (!) shortening into 1 cm squares.
Mix flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda. Add shortening to flour mixture and mix until crumbly. Make a well in the center and add 300 ml buttermilk. Fold the flour mixture into the buttermilk using your hands until a sticky dough has formed. You might need to add a bit more buttermilk.
Turn dough out onto a well floured surface. Fold the dough over itself a few times to create layers as you would if making puff pastry dough. Press dough down until it is about 3 cm thick and cut out biscuits using either a biscuit cutter or a glass with about an 8 cm diameter.
Place biscuits on ungreased baking sheet and brush with buttermilk. Bake for 20-25 minutes until biscuits are have risen and are golden brown.
