Ingredients
Serves: 4
- 2/3 cup flour
- 1 pound venison stew meat
- 1/4 cup bacon drippings or canola oil
- 2/3 cup chopped onion
- 1 cup water
- 2 small tomatoes, peeled and chopped
- 2 teaspoons cider vinegar
- 2 small potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 2 small carrots, sliced
- 1/2 cup chopped celery
Preparation method
Prep: 15 mins | Cook: 8 hours
1. In a shallow dish, whisk together the flour, salt, and pepper. Dredge venison in flour mixture.
2. Heat drippings or canola oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown dredged venison in hot oil for about 5 minutes, searing the outsides, then add onion and stir. Add water, tomato, and vinegar. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat.
3. Place potatoes, carrots, and celery in bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker. Transfer venison mixture to slow cooker on top of the vegetables, then cover and cook on LOW for 8 hours.Alternate Method
Cook stew on HIGH for about 4 hours.
Tip
To thicken the stew, combine 2 tablespoons of cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of cold water in a small bowl. Slowly stir cornstarch mixture into stew with slow cooker set to HIGH, then repeat until desired thickness is reached.
