Ingredients

500 g fresh breadcrumbs
350 g apples, peeled, cored and finely chopped
225 g currants
110 g vegetable suet
4 medium eggs, beaten
2 medium lemons, zest and juice

Instructions

Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl to make a sticky dough. Pour the mixture into a well-buttered pudding basin.

Cover with pleated greaseproof paper and foil. Place in the top portion of a steamer and fill the bottom section with boiling water. Steam for about 3 hours and check the water level about every 30 minutes and top up with more boiling water as necessary.

Turn out and serve hot with a chocolate sauce.
