Mom's stick to your ribs southern style spaghetti sauce recipe details
Handed down to me from my mom. This is vaguely Italian. This stuff is meant to be made by the gallons and to feed the entire neighborhood. It sticks to your ribs, and is hearty and warming. You can add red pepper flakes for a bit more kick. I usually add a little more salt and pepper for my own taste. This makes about 18 cups (My best guess. It makes a WHOLE lot) and it freezes well. I make the entire thing and freeze portions in large plastic resealable bags. Sauce for the rest of the month!
Ready in: 3 hours 20 mins
Ingredients
Makes: 18 cups. At least this much.- 2 pounds lean ground beef
- 3 yellow onions, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 2 (28 ounce) cans diced tomatos
- 1 (16 ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1 (8 ounce) can tomato paste
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon oregano
- 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
Preparation method
Prep: 20 mins | Cook: 3 hours1. Brown ground beef in a skillet over medium heat.
2. Add onions and green pepper. Cook until soft.
3. Add the remaining ingredients. Stir well, bring to almost a boil, reduce heat to low and let simmer for 3 hours.Make it healthier
I have used ground turkey instead of beef and it works just as well.
SubstitutionSubstitute the beef with 16oz of frozen spinach and you have a great vegetarian sauce. Pay attention to the labels on your tomato sauce and this can easily be vegan as well.
