Lithuanian apple kugel recipe details
- Ingredients:
- 8 ounces wide egg noodles
- 1/4 cup soft butter or margarine
- 8 ounces softened cream cheese
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups milk or half & half
- 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- dash of salt
- 1 cup golden raisins
- 2 Tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup crushed graham crackers
- 2 apples, sliced and soaked to prevent browning
Cook noodles. Drain, return to pot and toss with 1/4 cup butter or margarine. Beat cream cheese and add sugar and eggs. Stir in half & half or milk, lemon juice, vanilla and salt. Fold in buttered noodles and raisins. Pour into a buttered 9 x 13-inch casserole dish and bake 20 minutes at 350 degrees.
Melt 2 Tablespoons butter and add graham cracker crumbs. Remove the kugel from the oven. Sprinkle with buttered crumbs and arrange apple slices on top. Return to the oven and bake until custard is firm — about 20 to 25 minutes. Cool slightly before cutting into squares.
This recipe is also delicious served with fresh peaches in place of the apples and accompanied by sausage — a Sunday morning favorite at Beaver Lake Bed & Breakfast.
