Easy spaghetti sauce recipe details
This is a classic my mother taught me when I was young and she had to work. It’s a hearty way to end a cold winter’s day. Just throw everything in a sauce pan on low or into a crock pot and let it cook all day. This is a family sized recipe, cut it in half if you are cooking for two.
Ready in: 1 hour 15 mins
Ingredients
Serves: 4- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1/2 pound Italian sausage
- 2 (15 ounce) cans tomato sauce
- 3/4 cup chopped yellow onion
- 1 medium green bell pepper, chopped
- 1 (6.5 ounce) can sliced black ripe olives
- 1 cup thin sliced mushrooms
- 1/2 tablespoon white sugar
- 1/2 tablespoon crushed basil
- 1 tablespoon crushed oregano
- 2 whole bay leaves
- 2 tablespoons fresh minced garlic
- *1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 tablespoon flour
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- 1 cup warm water
Preparation method
Prep: 30 mins | Cook: 45 mins1. In a medium skillet, cook ground beef and Italian sausage until both are fully cooked. Drain fat and set aside.
2. Put tomato sauce, onion, peppers, olives and mushrooms into large sauce pan or crock pot.
3. Add sugar, basil, oregano, bay leaves, garlic, salt and pepper.
4. *Taste sauce before adding salt as different canned sauces have widely varying sodium contents, which may require more or less salt depending on your preference.
5. Pour warm water into a small container, preferably one that can be sealed. Add flour and cornstarch, shake vigorously with top of container sealed until mixture has no lumps. Pour slowly into sauce and mix until homogeneous.
6. Once all ingredient are added, cover and set heat to low or simmer settings and allow to cook as long as possible. Let simmer last 10-20 minutes uncovered on medium-low to allow for thickening if sauce is too thin.Cook’s notes
The longer this recipe cooks the better it tastes, however it is very tasty in as little as 45 minutes of simmering. Serve over spaghetti or another pasta of your choice, goes great with red wine, a garden salad and some French bread. OPTIONAL: If you are in a hurry, sauté onions, pepper and garlic in a small skillet with 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat until onions are translucent.
