Cheesy burger buns recipe details
Ingredients
For the dough: | |
175 ml | lukewarm water, around 40°C/100°F) |
4 tbsp | unsalted butter, softened |
1 large | egg |
350 g | plain flour, a little more may be required |
2 tbsp | sugar |
150 g | Parmesan cheese, freshly grated or other hard or semi-hard cheese of choice |
1 ¼ tsp | salt |
2 ½ tsp | instant yeast |
For the glaze: | |
3 tbsp | butter, melted |
Instructions
Combine the ingredients in a large bowl and bring together to a rough dough. Knead until the dough is smooth and elastic. You may need to adjust consistency with a little extra flour or water if necessary.Transfer the dough to a lightly greased large bowl and roll the dough in the oil 2 or 3 times. Cover the bowl with cling film and allow the dough to rise for about 1-1¼ hours or until doubled in size.
Knock back the dough and transfer to a lightly oiled surface. Divide into 8 equal portions and turn each into a smooth ball. Place slightly apart on a greased baking sheet or one covered with baking parchment. Gently flatten the balls until about 3-inches, 7-7.5cm in diameter. Cover with a damp tea towel and allow to rise for about an hour.
After 40-45 minutes, preheat the oven to Gas Mark 4, 180ºC, 350ºF.
Glaze the fully risen buns with melted butter and bake the buns until light golden brown, about 17-20 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and glaze once again while hot. Allow to cool completely before use.
Split and lightly toast if preferred, or simply split to fill.
Note: due to the cheese, or rather its varying fat content, it is possible that the buns will become mottled during baking. This is quite normal.
