Canadian rye cakes recipe details
Ingredients
275 g | rye flour |
1 tsp | bicarbonate of soda |
1 tsp | salt |
350 ml | buttermilk |
2 medium | eggs, beaten |
60 ml | molasses or treacle |
oil for frying |
Instructions
Quantity produced depends upon the size produced.Mix the flour, soda and salt together in a bowl. Blend the milk, eggs and treacle in another bowl or jug. Add the liquids to the dry ingredients and beat until thoroughly blended.
Heat a shallow frying pan or large, heavy-based saucepan with sufficient oil to shallow fry and when hot, add tablespoons full of batter. Fry for about 3 minutes, turning occasionally, until well browned on both sides.
Drain on several layers of kitchen paper and serve immediately.
