Boiled cabbage with bacon recipe details
Very tender, very flavorful vegetable side. Based on this recipe, seems like Army cooks don’t think much of cabbage. Adapted from the 1910 Manual for Army Cooks.

Ingredients
Serves: 6- 3 pounds cabbage, cored and chopped
- 1/2 pound thick-cut bacon
- 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1/4 cup water
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Preparation method
Prep: 10 mins | Cook: 3 hours1. Bring cabbage, bacon, vinegar, and 2 cups of water to boil in a large saucepan. Simmer uncovered on very low heat for 3 hours, adding additional hot water if needed, until cabbage is tender and cooked down.
2. Whisk together the flour and water in a small bowl, then add gradually to the simmered cabbage. Cook for 5 more minutes to thicken, then season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve.
