Alberta surprise recipe details
The name says nothing about what this recipe is. It’s not Canadian. It’s not French. It’s not surprising. It’s epically Italian.
Ready in: 1 hour 35 mins
Ingredients
Serves: 6- 1 (10 ounce) can diced tomatoes with green chiles
- 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
- 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes

- 1 onion, medium sized
- 1 (15 ounce) can black olives
- 3 garlic cloves
- 6 slices deli turkey
- 4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup Parmesan cheese
- To taste: thyme, oregano, basil, garlic powder, salt, italian seasoning, marjoram, sage, tarragon, onion powder, garlic powder, fresh ground pepper
Preparation method
Prep: 1 hour | Cook: 35 mins1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
2. Prepare pasta according to the box directions.
3. While pasta is cooking, mix all tomato ingredients into a medium saucepan, heating the pan on moderately low.
4. Slice and sliver the onion, chop the garlic, and add to the sauce.
5. Slice the olives, then add them and spices (to taste) into the sauce.
6. Stir in a cup or so of mozzarella cheese into the sauce, and cook it until cheese is starting to melt, and onions are just beginning to get done. They’ll continue cooking while it bakes.
7. After the pasta has finished cooking, pour it into a 9×13 or bigger glass dish, and pour the sauce over it.
8. Stir everything together until the pasta has been thoroughly coated in the sauce, and mix in another cup and a half of mozzarella cheese.
9. Bake covered with aluminum foil for 25 minutes.
10. Cut and dice the deli-sliced turkey.
11. Mix the Parmesan cheese together with Italian seasoning and fresh-ground pepper, to taste.
12. After the baking is finished, lay the deli meat in a layer over top of it, then sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese and the Parmesan cheese mixture over top.
13. Bake uncovered for 10 minutes or until cheese is melted.
