This venison potjie recipe is a delightful South African dish that combines tender venison meat with a medley of vegetables and aromatic spices. Slow-cooked in a cast-iron pot over an open fire, this recipe brings out the rich flavors of the meat while creating a hearty and comforting meal. Ingredients

2 kg venison, deboned and cut into small cubes
1 kg beef shin, cut in thick slices
5 tbsp flour
1 tsp salt
some freshly ground pepper
pinch(es) freshly ground nutmeg
400 g mushrooms, cleaned and quartered
400 ml vegetable stock
1 l apple juice
250 ml dry white wine
4  potatoes, peeled and cut into cubes
5  carrots, sliced
5  onions, sliced
1  butternut squash cut into small cubes
4 large tomatoes, peeled and sliced
For the dumplings:
350 g self-raising flour
½ tsp salt
350 ml milk

Instructions

Sear meat in heated potjie with little oil until brown. Add flour, stock and spices. Heat apple juice and wine in a separate pot and pour it over the meat. Put the lid on and simmer on low heat for 3 hours.

Then place vegetables except the pumpkin and tomatoes on top of the meat, from now on do not stir anymore and simmer for another 30 minutes with the lid on.

In the meantime, mix the ingredients for the dumplings together to form a soft dough. Place tomatoes and pumpkin on top of vegetables and scoop the dough on top of vegetables and simmer for another 20 to 30 minutes.
