Venison potjie recipe details
Ingredients
2 kg | venison, deboned and cut into small cubes |
1 kg | beef shin, cut in thick slices |
5 tbsp | flour |
1 tsp | salt |
some | freshly ground pepper |
pinch(es) | freshly ground nutmeg |
400 g | mushrooms, cleaned and quartered |
400 ml | vegetable stock |
1 l | apple juice |
250 ml | dry white wine |
4 | potatoes, peeled and cut into cubes |
5 | carrots, sliced |
5 | onions, sliced |
1 | butternut squash cut into small cubes |
4 large | tomatoes, peeled and sliced |
For the dumplings: | |
350 g | self-raising flour |
½ tsp | salt |
350 ml | milk |
Instructions
Sear meat in heated potjie with little oil until brown. Add flour, stock and spices. Heat apple juice and wine in a separate pot and pour it over the meat. Put the lid on and simmer on low heat for 3 hours.Then place vegetables except the pumpkin and tomatoes on top of the meat, from now on do not stir anymore and simmer for another 30 minutes with the lid on.
In the meantime, mix the ingredients for the dumplings together to form a soft dough. Place tomatoes and pumpkin on top of vegetables and scoop the dough on top of vegetables and simmer for another 20 to 30 minutes.
