Ingredients
Serves: 4- 3 tablespoons butter
- 2 pounds green cabbage, shredded
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon caraway seeds
- Salt and pepper
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef, pork, and veal mixture
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
Preparation method
Prep: 20 mins | Cook: 25 mins1. Place butter in a skillet and set over medium-high heat. When butter melts, cook cabbage with water for about 5 minutes to wilt. Add maple syrup, 1 teaspoon caraway seeds, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5 more minutes to let the cabbage finish cooking.
2. Measure out 1 cup cooked cabbage and spread into a thin layer on a plate to cool.
3. Meanwhile, gently mix the meat, breadcrumbs, egg, allspice, and 2 teaspoons caraway seeds. Divide into 12 pieces and flatten.
4. Place 1 teaspoon of cooked, cooled cabbage in each round of meat mixture. Seal the meat around the cabbage and form into balls.
5. Pour 1 cup of water into the remaining cabbage in the skillet, and place stuffed meatballs in the skillet with the cabbage. Bring the water to a simmer over medium heat, then simmer covered for 15 minutes or until meat is cooked through.
