- Ingredients
- 5 eggs
- 1/2 cup maple syrup
- Pinch of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- Four 1-inch slices of French bread
- 5 Tablespoon melted butter
- Freshly ground nutmeg
- 2 Tablespoons white sugar
Whisk eggs in bowl; beat in syrup and salt until thoroughly blended. Dissolve baking powder in cream; beat into egg mixture. Place bread on large baking sheet (with edges) and pour egg mixture over bread. Let bread soak 30 minutes, turning frequently.
Place oven rack on top part of oven and preheat to 450 degrees. Place oblong baking dish in oven to heat about 3 minutes. Brush 3 Tablespoons of melted butter over hot dish that will contain the bread slices; arrange bread slices over buttered area about 1 inch apart. Sprinkle with nutmeg. Bake 8 minutes. Remove pan from oven; brush bread with remaining 2 Tablespoons of melted butter and sprinkle with sugar. Continue to cook another 8 minutes until puffy and browned on top. Serve immediately.
