This dish has a long history, from the Acadians (who became the Cajuns) and then eventually to the U.S. Army. Adapted from the 1910 Manual for Army Cooks.

Ingredients

Serves: 6
  • 1/2 small head cabbage, minced
  • 1 tomato, minced
  • 1 onion, minced
  • 3 dill pickles, minced
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • Salt and cayenne pepper, to taste
  • Ground cloves, to taste
  • Water

Preparation method

Prep: 10 mins

1. In a large serving bowl, combine all ingredients, adding just enough water to bring the total amount of salad up to about 3 cups.
