Like mozzarella sticks? Like pizza? Let’s put the two together! Everyone loves these little cheese stick appetizers. Make up a bunch ahead of time and keep them in the freezer, that way all you have to do is drop them in the frier and heat up some marinara sauce.
Ready in: 15 mins

Ingredients

Makes: 36 pizza sticks
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1/4 cup water

  • 12 (1 ounce) sticks string cheese
  • granulated garlic powder to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano, or to taste
  • 1 (14 ounce) package wonton skins
  • 36 slices pepperoni sausage
  • 1 (6 ounce) can sliced mushrooms, drained and minced

  • oil for frying
  • 1 (14 ounce) jar marinara sauce for serving

Preparation method

Prep: 10 mins | Cook: 5 mins

1. Dissolve the flour in the water in a small bowl; set aside. Cut each piece of string cheese into three equal pieces and place into a bowl. Season with garlic powder, oregano, and black pepper. Toss to coat; set aside.
2. To assemble the pizza sticks, place a wonton skin onto your work surface with one of the corners pointing towards you. Place a slice of pepperoni into the center, then about 1/4 teaspoon of the minced mushroom on top. Place a piece of mozzarella on top of that.
3. Fold the tip pointing towards you over the filling, then fold the left and right sides over the filling too. Dip your finger in the flour/water mixture, and moisten the part of the wonton skin pointing away from you. Snugly roll the filling away from you over the loose end of the wonton skin. Repeat with the remaining ingredients.
4. To cook, heat your deep fryer to 365 degrees F. While the oil is heating, pour the marinara sauce into a saucepan, and heat on the stove.
5. Fry the pizza sticks about a dozen at a time in the hot oil until they turn golden brown and float to the surface, about 3 minutes. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate. Don’t put too many in your deep frier at once or they’ll stick together and not cook properly. Serve with the marinara sauce.Make ahead tip

These little suckers do take a while to make, so, do it ahead of time and chuck ’em in the freezer. They’re so small you won’t even need to thaw them before tossing them in the frier.
