Ingredients
4 medium | onions, thinly sliced |
100 g | butter |
1 tsp | white sugar |
1 tbsp | flour |
600 ml | water |
120 ml | red wine |
300 ml | beef or vegetable broth |
250 g | Swiss cheese, sliced |
1 | French baguette |
Instructions
Melt butter in a saucepan. Stir in sugar, add onions and sauté over medium heat for 10 minutes.Stir in flour until well blended with the onions. Add water, wine, and beef broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes.
Cut four thick slices of the baguette and toast them.
Ladle soup into four oven-safe bowls and place 1 slice toasted bread on top of the soup in each bowl.
Place cheese slices on top of the bread bake at 220°C for 10 minutes, or just until cheese is melted. Serve with the remaining bread.
