Malasadas (portuguese fried bread dough) details
Every Friday evening, we shared Mother’s and Father’s sweet bread, as we children called it.— Helen Mary Duarte
- Ingredients:
- 8 eggs, room temperature
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 pint milk, warm
- 1 stick butter, room temperature
- 4 cups flour
- 2 yeast cakes
Proof yeast in 1 cup warm milk and 1 Tablespoon sugar; stir. Sift together flour, salt, and sugar and make a well in mixture. Add eggs and milk a little at a time. Add butter. Stir well. When thoroughly mixed, grease a large bowl and place dough in bowl.
Cover and let rise for about 1-1/2 to 2 hours. When dough is light and appears light in texture, cut off some of the dough and stretch it with your hands. Drop into hot fat and fry until golden brown. Pour warm honey or syrup over fried dough and serve hot or buttered with sugar.
