Italian easter bread recipe details
Ingredients1. Unbleached flour (2 1/2 to 3 1/2c)
2. uncooked eggs, colored with Easter egg dye (5)
3. melted shortening (2tbsp)
4. anise seed (1/2tsp)
5. chopped bleached almonds (1/3c)
6. mixed candied fruit(1/2c)
7. eggs at room temperature (2)
8. butter (2tsp)
9. milk (2/3c)
10. dry yeast (1pkg)
11. salt (1tsp)
12. sugar (1/4c)
For icing Ingredients
1. Confectioner sugar (1c)
2. vanilla (1/8tsp)
3. milk (1tbsp)
4. colored sprinkles
Method of preparation
1. Take a large bowl, Blend yeast, sugar and salt with 1 cup of flour. Take a sauce pan, milk and butter and heat it until the butter gets melted.
2. Pour milk into the dry ingredients and mix it with wooden spoon. Now add eggs and 1/2cup of flour to make thick batter. Then make the ball of dough by adding enough flour. Place the dough on floured board and knead it for about 10 minutes.
3. Take a bowl, grease it and then place the dough in it. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and then place it warm to double in bulk for about 1 hour.
4. Take a bowl, mix fruit, nut and anise seed in it. Take out the dough from the bowl and then place on lightly floured surface and knead it in nut and fruit mixture and then divide it in half. Roll each piece into 24 inch rope and then twist the two ropes to make a ring on a baking sheet.
5. Brush the dough with melted shorting and then make a place in the dough by push the twist aside and add egg in it. Now push the egg down and cover it with waxed paper and keep it warm place to double in bulk for about 1 hour.
6. Place the sheet in preheated oven and bake it for 35 minutes at 350 degrees F until the knife inserted in it comes out clean. Take off the sheet from the oven and place on wire rack to cool. When the bread gets cool then drizzle the icing on the top and then decorate it with colored sprinkles.
