Ready in: 2 hours 50 mins
Ingredients
Makes: 20 doughnuts- 2 (1/4-ounce) packages active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1/2 cup warm 2-percent milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 1/2 to 5 cups flour
- Vegetable oil for frying
- 1 1/3 cups powdered sugar
- 6 tablespoons water
Preparation method
Prep: 25 mins | Cook: 25 mins | Extra time: 2 hours, rising1. Stir yeast and water together in a mixing bowl. When yeast dissolves, stir in milk, sugar, shortening, eggs, salt, and 2 cups flour. Continue adding flour until a dough ball forms (it won’t be very stiff–that’s okay, and you probably won’t use all the flour).
2. Sprinkle some flour on a cutting board and place the dough on the flour. Begin to fold the dough over onto itself and smooshing it back out; repeat for about 7 minutes, working the dough into a smoother and stretchier ball.
3. Coat a clean mixing bowl with nonstick cooking spray. Place the dough in the bowl, spritz again with the cooking spray, and cover with plastic wrap. Let rise for 1 hour to double in size.
4. Coat two baking sheets with nonstick cooking spray.
5. Sprinkle more flour onto the cutting board. Deflate the dough with your hand, then transfer it from the bowl to the cutting board. Use a rolling pin to stretch the dough out to be 1/2-inch thick.
6. Cut into doughnut shapes with a doughnut-shaped cutter. Set on prepared baking sheets, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise for 1 hour to double in size.
7. Fill a deep fryer with oil according to manufacturer’s instructions. Set temperature to 375 degrees F. When oil is hot, begin frying the doughnuts in batches until browned on both sides. Drain.
8. Whisk sugar with water. While doughnuts are still warm, dip in the mixture to frost. Serve when glaze has set.
