Ingredients
1 kg | beef, cut into 2 cm cubes |
1 kg | onions, peeled and cut into thin slices |
3 clove(s) | garlic, crushed |
2 tbsp | tomato paste |
1 tsp | caraway seeds |
3 tbsp | paprika powder |
1 tbsp | marjoram |
some | salt and pepper |
some | vegetable oil or lard |
2 tbsp | flour |
some | beef broth, |
Instructions
In a large pot, heat the lard or oil over medium-low flame and add the onions. Cook onions until they are nice and golden in color and tender.After about 25 minutes, add crushed garlic.
Another 10 minutes later, add the paprika powder, marjoram, tomato paste and caraway seeds. Cook for a few minutes, and then add the meat.
Add enough water (or broth) to barely cover the meat and season with salt and pepper. Stir and simmer, covered, over a low flame for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally.
Serving suggestion:Serve over noodles, rice, dumplings, or potatoes.
Note:The beef is cut from the upper part of the cow’s leg traditionally
If you do not like the whole seeds try grinding them or put them in a little sachet that can be removed after cooking
This recipe makes enough food for leftovers the next day, which taste even better. If you have the time, cook the goulash one day, let it cool, refrigerate it, and heat and serve it the following day.
