Easy orange cinnamon french toast recipe details
This is a recipe a friend of the family made us when I was a kid, many years ago. I have played with it over the years trying to reproduce it, and this is close enough. As camp cook, I used to make this for my hunting buddies before everyone went out into the wilderness hunting for the day… They loved it. At home it is still a frequent treat.
Ready in: 20 mins
Ingredients
Serves: 6- 1 loaf French bread
- 3 eggs
- Dash of salt
- 1 orange
- 1 cup milk
- Cinnamon
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
Preparation method
Prep: 10 mins | Cook: 10 mins1. The night before you want to serve the French toast, slice bread into thick (1-1/2″) slices and leave it out to get stale.
2. The next morning, crack eggs in mixing bowl and add dash of salt. Beat with fork until mixed. (Salt helps break up yokes.)
3. Zest the orange, then juice (or use 1/2 cup orange juice and orange slices for garnish).
4. Mix eggs, zest, juice of orange, and milk together in a mixing bowl.
5. Soak bread liberally on both sides in egg mixture. Cook in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown, about 10 minutes, then sprinkle with cinnamon.
6. Before serving, dust top and edges heavily with powdered sugar.Serving Suggestions
Serve with favorite butter, syrup, and/or pie fruit filling. With a couple of eggs on the side, bacon or ham slices, or a bowl of grits… this is good eatin’!
