Beer and beef — what could be better? This easy slow cooker recipe uses lager, invented in Germany and now the most popular style of beer in the U.S.

Ingredients
Serves: 10- 1 (4 pound) boneless beef chuck roast, cut in half
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 (12 ounce) bottle lager beer (Budweiser, Coors, etc)
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1/4 cup cold water
Preparation method
Prep: 10 mins | Cook: 8 hours1. Set roast in a large slow cooker and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Top with onion.
2. Whisk beer together with ketchup and brown sugar in a bowl. Drizzle over the beef and onion.
3. Cook on Low for 8 hours, then transfer the roast to a plate and cover with foil. Pour cooking juices into a saucepan and set over high heat.
4. In a bowl, stir flour and water together. When juices come to a boil, add the flour mixture. Boil for 2 minutes to thicken.
5. Serve the roast sliced with gravy spooned over each helping.
