Christmas morning wifesaver recipe details
- Ingredients
- 16 slices white bread, crust removed
- 1/2 pound fresh mushrooms
- 16 slices Brie or Camembert cheese
- 6 eggs
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
- 1/4 cup minced onion
- 1/4 cup green pepper, finely chopped
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 3 cups whole milk
- 1 dash Tabascopepper sauce
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 1/2 cup crushed corn flakes
In a 9 x 13-inch buttered baking dish, place 8 pieces of bread; add smaller pieces to cover dish entirely. Saute sliced mushrooms in small amount of butter and spread over bread slices. Lay slices of cheese over mushrooms, then cover with remaining bread slices to make it like a sandwich.
In a bowl, beat eggs, salt, and pepper. To the egg mixture add dry mustard, onion, green pepper, Worcestershire sauce, milk, and Tabascopepper sauce. Pour egg mixture over the sandwiches, cover, and let stand in fridge overnight. In the morning, melt 1/4 cup butter and pour over the top. Cover with crushed corn flakes. Bake uncovered for 1 hour at 350 degrees F. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.
