Burger buns recipe details
Ingredients
125 ml | lukewarm water, around 40°-45ºC/100°-110ºF |
4 tsp | active dried yeast |
175 ml | warm milk, 40°-45°C/100°-110°F |
60 g | sugar |
3 tbsp | unsalted butter |
1 ½ tsp | salt |
2 medium | eggs |
500 g | plain flour, you may not need all |
For the Glaze: | |
1 medium | egg, beaten |
poppy seeds, dehydrated onions or sesame seeds for example |
Instructions
Place the water into a large bowl. Sprinkle the yeast over the surface, add milk, sugar, butter, salt, eggs and half of the flour. Beat for 2 minutes with an electric mixer on medium speed. Add more of the remaining flour to obtain a soft but not sticky dough.Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 4-6 minutes until smooth and pliable. Form into a ball and transfer to a lightly greased bowl. Roll the dough around a couple of times to oil the surface, cover and allow to rise in a warm place for about 35-45 minutes, or until doubled in size.
Knock back the dough and turn out to a lightly floured surface. Divide into four equal pieces and then sub-divide each piece into 3 portions. Form each piece into a ball and arrange the balls on a lightly greased baking sheet. Lightly flatten the balls to about a 4-inch, 10 cm disc. Cover and allow to rise in a warm place for about 30-40 minutes, or until doubled in size.
Preheat the oven to Gas Mark 6, 200ºC, 400ºF.
Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown and well risen. The bottoms should sound hollow when tapped. Remove from tray and cool on a wire rack.
Serve plain, if wished.
Variations:
You can add a topping before baking; dehydrated onions, poppy seeds or sesame seeds are the norm. If adding a topping, glaze with a beaten egg.
