This is a simple easy to make barbecue sauce you can use on almost anything. It’s a nice accompaniment for chicken, ribs, and as an ingredient in barbecued beans. It adds a nice taste that is not overpowered by the usual high sugar and salt content of commercial products.
Ready in: 10 mins
Ingredients
Serves: 32- 1 (24 ounce) bottle ketchup
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon celery seed, crushed or ground
- 2 tablespoons ground cumin
- 1 tablespoon ground red pepper*
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1/2 tablespoon chili powder*
- 1-2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 1 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1-2 teaspoons liquid smoke
Preparation method
Prep: 10 mins1. In a small bowl, empty the 20 oz bottle of ketchup. Mix this together with the sugar, salt, celery seed, cumin, red pepper, garlic powder, chili powder, and lemon juice; set aside.
2. Using a funnel in the ketchup bottle, pour the vinegar and liquid smoke in, cap and shake to mix. Pour this mixture into the bowl and mix well. Taste and add additional seasonings as desired. Pour all of this mixture back into the ketchup bottle, label it and store it in the refrigerator. Use the extra sauce for what you are grilling.Cook’s note:
*You may substitute Chipotle powder for the chili powder which will give the sauce a nice somewhat smoky flavor. For that matter, you may even use it instead for the ground red pepper or chili powder altogether.
