- Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter, melted
- 3 cups day-old bread, cubed
- 3 cups sliced apples
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 3/4 cup water
- 1 lemon (rind and juice)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix together butter and bread cubes. In a 9 x 13-inch greased baking dish, arrange layers of bread cubes and apples, saving some bread cubes for final layer. Sprinkle each layer with spices and sugar. Mix lemon juice and rind with water and pour over apples. Sprinkle top with remaining bread cubes.
Cover baking dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 45 minutes. Serve warm with hard sauce.
Variations: Raisins are a nice addition to this dish (about 3/4 cup). We serve this on cold mornings without the hard sauce, using vanilla yogurt instead.
