Mom's orange delight cookies recipe details
- Ingredients
- 3/4 cup butter or margarine
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1-1/2 teaspoons grated orange rind
- 1/2 cup sour milk
- 3 cups flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup nuts (hickory or pecan)
- Glaze:
- 1-1/2 teaspoons grated orange rind
- 1/3 cup orange juice
- 1 cup sugar
Mom was a farmer’s wife, tended a huge vegetable garden, worked full-time as a secretary, raised three kids, and always found time to bake cookies. She usually made Orange Delight Cookies in January, after we had finished all of the different kinds of Christmas cookies she had baked.
These cookies have a “cake-like” texture with an orange juice and sugar glaze on top. The cookies should be baked at least one day in advance to bring out the flavors. The cookies actually get better with age up to two weeks.

Cream butter and sugars. Stir in eggs, vanilla, orange rind, and sour milk. Mix in flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Stir in nuts. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees about 10 minutes. Make glaze by combining orange rind, orange juice, and sugar. Using a teaspoon, drizzle on cookies while they are still hot.
