Ingredients:
1/4 cup shortening
2 Tablespoons butter, softened
3/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup molasses
1/3 cup water
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1-1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
2 Tablespoons sugar
Instructions:

Cream together shortening, butter, and brown sugar until fluffy. Beat in molasses and water. Blend in remaining dry ingredients except 1 Tablespoon sugar to form a smooth dough. Chill dough for several hours or overnight.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Roll out dough on floured board until 1/4 thick. Cut into 3-inch circles and place on greased baking sheet. Re-roll and cut scraps. Sprinkle cookies with sugar before baking. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Allow cookies to stand on cookie sheet for 5 to 7 minutes before removing to cooling rack
