This Italian potato gateau recipe is a delightful dish that combines the richness of potatoes with the flavors of Italy. With layers of thinly sliced potatoes, Parmesan cheese, and a creamy sauce, this dish is both comforting and satisfying. Baked to perfection, the gateau has a crispy golden crust on the outside and a soft and creamy interior. It is perfect as a side dish or even as a main course.

Ingredients

1 kg potatoes, peeled
150 g Mortadella ham
200 g mozzarella cheese
4  eggs
50 ml milk
50 g butter
bread crumbs
salt

Instructions

Boil potatoes and cook two eggs. Cut Mozarella into little cubes and Mortadella into little pieces.

Once the potatoes are cooked and soft, take a fork or a potato press to create potato mash. Add egg white of two uncooked eggs, milk and butter and mix together to get a creamy potato paste.

Add Mortadella and Mozzarella, salt and butter and mix well.

Cut cooked eggs into little pieces. Put paste into a dish (ca. 20 x 15 cm) and add egg pieces and make sure to cover them completely with the potato mash. Add bread crumbs and bits of butter on top.

Put dish in the oven and bake at 200°C for about 20 – 30 minutes. Oven does not need to be preheated but do check on the gateau from time to time as baking times may vary.
