Fresh plum kuchen recipe details
- Ingredients
- 1/2 cup soft butter or margarine
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 3/4 teaspoon almond extract
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 20 small plum halves or 4 to 5 large plums, sliced
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
We first made this recipe after a farmer at a gas station in North Texas asked us if we’d like some freshly picked plums “for the road.” We had more than we could consume on the road and made this delectable coffee cake when we got home.
Heat oven to 400 degrees and grease a 9- or 10-inch round pan. Cream butter or margarine and 1/2 cup sugar in bowl until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Add almond extract and vanilla. Sift flour, baking powder, and salt and add to mixture. Pour batter into prepared pan. Top with small plum halves, cut side down, or sliced large plums.
Combine remaining 1/2 cup sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a separate bowl and sprinkle over plums. Bake for 30 minutes. Cut into wedges and serve warm with whipped cream, if desired.
