100 g | sugar, demerara, brown sugar or honey |
2 medium | eggs |
1 tsp | vanilla |
100 g | all-purpose flour |
50 g | cocoa powder, dark, unsweetened |

Instructions
Beat butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla on high speed for at least 3 minutes. In a second bowl, combine flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt. Add alternately with water to the creamed mixture. Blend fast until combined.
Fill paper lined muffin cups 2/3 full with batter. Bake at 180°C for about 17 to 20 minutes. Allow to cool before applying the icing.
Put cupcakes on an even surface on a tray or plate. Space them apart to apply icing. Using a frosting cone, apply a thick dot of icing in the middle of each muffin.
Draw 8 lines for the legs and tentacles of a spider. Drop a small dot in front of the large one to form the spider’s face.
Alternatively:
Cover the cupcakes with orange icing, draw spider with black chocolate or frosting as a “black spider on an orange”. You also can draw a spider’s web. Do not overdo it: you do not want your guests spooked enough to drop the cupcake or run away from it.
