We took a trip to Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, and we stopped at the Skye Restaurant, where they served these with our meal. My husband’s cousin, Mamie MacDougal, gave me this recipe and we love them. … Judith Rice

Ingredients
1 cup butter (very soft, nearly melted)
1/2 cup Criscoshortening (very soft, nearly melted)
1 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda dissolved in 4 Tablespoons hot water
3 cups quick oats
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt

Thoroughly mix butter, shortening, and white sugar together with electric mixer. Add water and baking soda; mix well. Add flour and salt; mix well.

Roll out to 1/4-inch thick and cut into 3 x 3-inch squares. Put on lightly greased cookie sheets and bake in 375-degree oven for 15 minutes until golden brown.
