Fire up the deep-fryer for these fritters. They’re basically deep-fried meatballs. Adapted from the 1910 Manual for Army Cooks.

Ingredients
Serves: 6- Canola oil, for frying
- 1/2 pound bread
- 1 pound cooked beef stew meat or ground beef, finely chopped
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Preparation method
Prep: 10 mins | Cook: 10 mins1. Heat canola oil in deep fryer to 350 degrees F.
2. Dampen bread with water, then crumble into a mixing bowl. Combine with beef, onion, and salt and pepper to taste. Mixture should hold together.
3. Form into 1-inch balls. Deep fry in hot oil to brown, about 5 minutes, flipping midway through cooking time.
