Army chili con carne recipe details
A simple, filling bowl of chili that even the lowest private could make. Adapted from the 1910 Manual for Army Cooks.

Ingredients
Serves: 6- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 1/2 pounds beef stew meat
- 1 1/2 tablespoons chili powder
- 1 1/2 cups chili beans or prepared baked beans
- 4 cups beef stock
Preparation method
Prep: 10 mins | Cook: 2 hours1. In a heavy saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Cook the stew meat in the melted butter to brown it, about 6 minutes. Sprinkle with chili powder.
2. In a food processor or blender, puree 1 cup of the beans and stir into the beef mixture. Add remaining beans whole.
3. Cover mixture with beef stock and bring to a low boil, then simmer covered for 2 hours, adding more stock if necessary.
