- One 1-pound loaf firm raisin bread, sliced
- 1/4 cup butter (1/8 pound)
- 3 cups peeled and sliced tart apples (3 medium)
- 2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 4 eggs, lightly beaten
- 2-1/2 cups milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Maple syrup
This dish can be prepared the night before, if desired, then baked before serving time.
If you plan to bake this dish immediately, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking dish. Remove the crust from the bread and cut the slices into 3/4-inch cubes. In a medium frying pan, melt the butter. Add the apple and cook, stirring occasionally for 5 minutes or until tender.
Combine the flour, 2 Tablespoons of the sugar, and the cinnamon and stir into the apple. Cook, stirring gently for 1 minute or until thickened. Spoon into the prepared baking dish. Layer the bread cubes over the apple mixture.
In a medium bowl, mix the egg, milk, salt, and remaining sugar. Pour over the bread cubes. Using a spoon, press down on the bread so it absorbs the egg mixture. Cover and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight, or bake immediately.
Bake for 50 to 70 minutes or until golden and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Cut into squares and serve warm, with maple syrup.
