Common types of wine glasses

In basic terms, a glass is just a container for the fluid. But when it comes to wine the glass can be a work of art.

There are many different types of glasses that are specifically designed for serving and enjoying wine.

Here’s some of the most common types of wine glasses:

Red wine glasses

These glasses are typically larger and have a wider bowl than white wine glasses, which allows more room for the wine to breathe and for the aroma to develop. Red wine glasses are often used for full-bodied red wines, such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot.

White wine glasses

These glasses are typically smaller and have a more slender bowl than red wine glasses, which allows the wine to stay cooler and helps to preserve its fresh, delicate flavors. White wine glasses are often used for lighter-bodied white wines, such as Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc.

Champagne flutes

These tall, slender glasses have a narrow bowl and a long stem, which helps to keep sparkling wines, such as Champagne and sparkling wine, chilled and effervescent.

Dessert wine glasses

These glasses are typically smaller and have a shorter, wider bowl than other wine glasses. They are often used for serving sweet, fortified wines, such as Port or Sauternes.

Rosé wine glasses

These glasses are similar in shape to red wine glasses, but are typically slightly smaller and have a more slender bowl. They are often used for serving rosé wines, which are made from red grapes but have a lighter, pink color.

In general, the shape and size of a wine glass can affect the way that the wine tastes and smells, and it is important to choose the right glass for the type of wine being served.
