Red wine and onion sauce recipe details
Ingredients
700 g | onions, chopped |
300 g | red onions, chopped |
6 tsp | cornflour |
1 tbsp | tomato puree |
500 ml | dry red wine |
salt and freshly ground black pepper | |
sugar | |
½ tsp | mustard seeds |
2 tbsp | oil |
1 l | water |
Instructions
In a pan heat the oil and sauté the onions until slightly golden. Stir in the tomato purée and cook for another minute. Add 1 teaspoon of sugar and a pinch of salt. Cook until the sugar has caramelized. Pour in the wine and the water and bring to a boil. Add the mustard seeds, cover with a lid and simmer over low heat for 4 hours.Strain the sauce, bring to a boll again and cook until reduced to approximately 1 litre. Stir together the cornflour and a little bit of water. Stir the mixture into the sauce and cook for another 5 minutes. Season to taste with salt, pepper and sugar.
Serve with steak and mashed potatoes.
