Indian pea soup with a spicy mustard seasoning recipe details
Ingredients
250 g | yellow split peas, or Channa Dal |
½ tsp | ground turmeric |
½ tsp | cumin seed |
1 | red chili, seeded and finely diced |
vegetable stock, boiling | |
salt | |
plain yoghurt | |
For the seasoning: | |
3 tbsp | corn oil |
1 tbsp | mustard seed |
1 tbsp | cardamom seed |
1 | onion, cut in half rings |
2 clove(s) | garlic, minced |
1 | red chili, seeded and finely sliced in rings |
Instructions
Pour 1 litre of cold water into a saucepan, add the Channa Dal, turmeric, cumin and chili and bring to the boil, Cover and simmer over low heat until the peas are tender.Purée in a food processor (in portions if necessary) and add as much boiling stock as needed to get a viscid soup. Reheat, but don’t allow to boil and season with salt to taste.
For the seasoning:
Heat the oil and sauté the mustard seeds and cardamom seeds until bursting. Add the onion and cook until lightly brown. Add the garlic and the chili and sauté for approximately another minute to unfold the flavour.
Serve the soup in individual bowls with a small heap of seasoning and a dollop of plain yoghurt.
