Social time in the winter months at the Ant Street Inn always features this hot apple drink. We usually double or triple the recipe because everyone wants 2 or 3 cups. This is a favorite of the family’s at Christmas. It has been loved by Grannie, Aunt Lois, Aunt Lou and Tommy to mention a few
Tommy, Pam’s husband had a habit of drinking multiple cups of cider and usually drank most of it before the guests could get any. One time, Pam thought she could hide the cider from Tommy by heating a percolator of cider inside a storage area. The coffee pot started “moaning” as some older pots will do. Tommy heard the moaning and thought a guest was having a problem. Pam had to tell him she was just hiding the cider from him and he could have one cup!
Tie up the following in cheesecloth or a coffee filter: sugar, allspice, cloves, salt, nutmeg and cinnamon. Place the spices with cider in large saucepan. Slowly bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove spices. Serve in warmed mugs with a clove studded orange wedge in each.
You can also make the recipe in a clean coffee percolator and keep it warm there while serving it.
