Cross buns recipe details
Ingredients
500 g | plain flour |
1 tsp | mixed spice |
1 tsp | salt |
60 g | butter |
50 g | castor sugar, keep 1 tsp set aside |
1 medium | egg |
240 ml | milk |
15 g | yeast |
Instructions
Sift the flour and combine the flour, salt and mixed spice in a bowl. Rub in the butter and the sugar.Warm milk over low heat. Do not bring to a boil.
Cream the yeast with 1 tsp sugar and add warm milk to into this mixture. Pour yeast and milk mixture into flour mixture. Mix well.
Cover bowl with a clean cloth and leave in a warm place for ten minutes.
Add egg and beat well until a soft but firm dough is formed. Cover and leave in a warm place to rise for one hour.
Knead on a floured surface and divide into twelve buns. Make a deep cross on the top of each bun with a knife.
Place on a greased baking tin and leave to prove for twenty minutes. Then bake at 200°C
for about twenty minutes.
