Hot Port is a nice beverage made with fortified wine (porto wine). Since it contains alcohol you are advised to consume this beverage in moderation. Hot port is a marvelous sip for the colder days of the year. You can combine hot port with a cheese platter or mince pie, fruitcake, or spicy biscuits or ginger biscuits.

Hot port trivia

  • Hot port historically has its roots in Irish and British traditions where hot beverages were consumed during colder parts of the year, especially in winter.
  •
  • In terms of health benefits it was (and still is) believed that a hot port can alleviate bad mood, sooth a sore throat, and help with colds in general. However this has not been medically proven.
  • While cloves are traditional, differnt variation of seasoning exists and is arguably better – some variations include cinnamon or nutmeg which adds extra warmth and complexity.
  • As per porto wine type – ruby port is most commonly used due to its rich, fruity flavor, but other types such as tawny port can also be considered. Tawny port adds a nutty, caramel-like depth and adds complecity in general.
  • Hot port is especially popular in Ireland and UK during winter months since it is often served as an alternative to mulled wine.

Ingredients

  • 600 ml port (porto wine)
  • 400 ml boiling water
  • 12 sugar cubes
  • 1 large organic lemon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg, grated
  • 1 vanilla pod

Instructions

1. Pour the port and water into a saucepan.

2. Rub the sugar over the lemon skin so that it absorbs the oil from the peel. Then add the sugar to the saucepan together with the lemon juice, the nutmeg and the vanilla pod.

3. Heat but do not boil and pour into a large bowl. Remove the vanilla pod before serving.

4. Serve hot. Enjoy your hot port!

It’s my favourite time of the year again! Ho ho ho!
I love a good hot port as it is a warming drink and I love its richness and spiciness, it really turns a good evening into a perfect evening. I usually combine it with savory food (cheese platter, charcuterie, or roasted nuts). It’s also delightful alongside sweet treats like mince pies, fruitcake, or spiced ginger biscuits, especially during the festive season!
My advice is to drink as much as possible of this festive drink (within reason) and enjoy the December. Just make sure you’re not drinking and driving.
Thanks for the recipe!
Happy holidays!
Liz
